Day 1 Amboseli
Be ready for collection
from your hotel from
1.30 pm - 2.00 pm.
Leaving
Nairobi, you drive out on the main
Mombasa road, turning off through the
small
village of Athi and continuing south
towards the Tanzania border. Near to
Namanga on the border you turn left and
on to a dirt road leading to Amboseli
National Park.
This Park
is a seasonal swamp; during the wet
season the waters spill over a large
area, attracting many different animals
and a great variety of birds. During the
dry weather the swamp dries up, and the
landscape is alive with swirling 'dust
devils' and a shimmering mirage. The
Park is always dominated by the huge
bulk of Mt. Kilimanjaro, at 5895 metres,
the highest mountain in Africa. The
sheer beauty of this magnificent
mountain in the early morning or late
evening is an unforgettable sight.
This
evening you game drive through the Park
to arrive at your base for two nights,
Ol Tukai Lodge.
The
main buildings of the lodge are in a
beautiful dark wood and are set looking
straight out onto the mountain. There is
a clear swimming pool in front of the
lodge and in the good weather meals are
taken in the open air, under the stars.
Accommodation is in bungalows, scattered
in the large grounds. Elephant often
browse nearby and the grounds are alive
with birdsong throughout the day.
Day 2 Amboseli
The day
starts early with a morning game drive
in the clear light of dawn when the
mountain stands proud in the sky above.
Amboseli is renowned for its herds of
elephant and the classic photograph of
Africa is an elephant striding out
purposefully in front of the mountain.
Game is easily seen. There are large
herds of buffalo, but the cat family are
more difficult. Lion and cheetah are
occasionally seen. Giraffe, zebra and a
variety of antelope proliferate. Bird
watching is a delight and the smaller
animals such as monkeys, mongoose and
wart hog may be spotted.
After
breakfast there is another opportunity
for a game drive in a different
direction to that of the early morning,
returning to the lodge in time for
lunch. Alternatively you may prefer to
stay and enjoy a swim in the pool during
the morning.
After lunch
time to rest, and then an evening game
drive, looking for the animals searching
for their evening 'dinner'. You return
to the Lodge in good time for your own
dinner.
Day 3 Nairobi
After an
early breakfast, you drive back to
Nairobi, arriving in the city before
lunch at the end of your safari.
