Day 1 Samburu
You
depart after breakfast at a time of your
choice and drive through rolling Kikuyu
countryside, you driver/guide points out
the interesting areas of agriculture.
Coffee bushes, sisal and pineapple
plantations proliferate until you get
into the smallholder areas where you
will almost certainly see maize and tea
growing.
The route
is hilly for the first 150 km and then
you turn up towards Nanyuki and you may
catch glimpses of Mt. Kenya.
The school
children in their uniforms (if it is
term time) will wave as you pass and you
may spot one or two small district
schools where lessons are going on.
You stop at
the Equator where there are local
craftsmen and you will be shown how the
water swirls in different directions on
each side of the equator line.
Drive on
through wheat fields and then drop down
the slopes of the mountain to Isiolo,
the provincial capital of the Northern
Province.
A short way
further on you turn left into Samburu
National Park and have your first
chance of spotting big game on your way
to Samburu Intrepids Camp.
Perched on
the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River in the
heart of Samburu National Reserve,
Samburu Intrepids enjoys a unique
perspective of one of Africa’s most
celebrated wilderness.
This
luxurious tented lodge offers 27 modern
tents with a private view over the
wildlife-rich riverbanks. The spacious
tents boast the very latest in luxury
camping, with soft four-poster beds,
handsome mahogany closets and writing
desks, and en suite bathrooms with
steaming hot showers. The bathrooms also

and sockets for shavers and battery
charging.

children to swim in the pool, and then
it is time for your first game drive in
the Park.
The two
neighbouring Parks, Samburu and Buffalo
Springs, are the home of the unique
northern species of animals, the shy
gerenuk, Beisa oryx, Somali blue‑necked
ostrich, the reticulated giraffe and
Grevy's zebra as well as the large
numbers of elephant and buffalo which
drink on the edge of the wide flowing
Ewaso Nyiro river which runs through the
Reserves. There are lion and cheetah and
leopard are regularly seen on baits
which are floodlit by the main lodges.
Return to
your lodge in the evening in time for a
shower and drink before dinner.
Day 2 Samburu
Today
is spent in the Park and at the lodge
and you decide when you want to game
drive or relax. The Lodge has pleasant
grounds in which it is possible to take
a guided bird walk, and many hours can
be spent sitting on the verandah
overlooking the river, spotting
crocodile, watching the cheeky vervet
monkeys, or perhaps enjoying the sight
of a family of elephant playing and
drinking on the water's edge.
Day 3 Lake Naivasha
Leaving
after breakfast, you drive out through
the Park, and back to Nanyuki where you
turn left and drive a short way to
Sweetwaters private sanctuary and luxury
tented camp. You will revel in the
tents. They are large and very
comfortable, all facing the waterhole,
and you will almost certainly catch
glimpses of Mt. Kenya
There is a
bright shop and intimate dining room and
lounge/bar. The grounds are full of
birds.
The
sanctuary is full of animals and here it
is possible to night drive if you so
wish.
There is
also the tame rhino 'Morani' who it is
quite possible to approach and pet.
Additionally there is a chimpanzee
sanctuary, set up to look after orphaned
chimps, and your children will delight
in a visit to these very human animals.
After lunch depart and drive to The
Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort
for dinner and overnight.
The Great
Rift Valley Lodge is perched on the side
of the Eburu Escarpment, overlooking
Lake Naivasha and the sweeping floor of
the world’s largest valley.
Day 4 Masai Mara
After
breakfast today you leave to drive to
the Masai Mara, Kenya's leading game
reserve. You climb the western wall of
the escarpment, and pass through the
provincial capital of Narok, the centre
of the Masai activity, first stopping at
'Maasai Colours' where a guide will give
you a short lecture on the Masai people
and you have a chance to purchase
refreshments.

Drive
across the Loita plains and into the
Masai Mara Reserve, arriving at Mara
Intrepids in time for lunch.
Sitting
above a sweeping bend in the Talek
River, at the confluence of the Maasai
Mara’s four game-viewing areas, Mara
Intrepids enjoys one of the most
spectacular locations in the world’s
best-known wilderness, a short drive
from the Mara River, where more than a
million wildebeest and zebra make their
perilous migration crossing every July
and August.
The luxury
tents are widely spread across a large
riverside site to ensure guests the
optimum privacy and peace. Each tent is
furnished in the classic style of the
grand African safaris, with large
four-poster beds and handsome
reproduction furniture offset by modern
en suite bathrooms with hot showers,
flush toilets and all modern amenities.
Each tent sits on a shady raised
platform, with sweeping views over the
riverbanks where a wide variety of
animals come to drink.
After lunch
a game drive in the Masai Mara Game
Reserve is the home of the largest
concentrations of animals in Kenya and
is the northern extension of the famous
Tanzania Serengeti National Park. It is
in this area that the annual migration
of wildebeeste, accompanied by the
predators takes place (normally between
June and September).
Huge prides
of lion live in the Mara, cheetah is
often found on the plains. There are
large herds of elephant and buffalo (but
sadly few rhino remain). Impala, zebra,
giraffe, the unusual topi, and many
other antelope graze across the famous
grassy plains. The birdlife in the Mara
is fantastic.
Return to
Mara Intrepids Camp for dinner
and overnight.
Day 5 Masai Mara
Today
is for you to decide the programme. You
may wish to take a picnic lunch and
visit the hippo pools to watch these
monsters relaxing, and perhaps spotting
crocodile on the banks. On the other
hand you may wish to take two game
drives (or even an optional hot air
balloon safari) and spend the hotter
hours of the day relaxing in the
grounds.
In the
evening there may be a video show on the
environment, or perhaps a Masai dancing
display to entertain you. Many visitors
find a full day on safari so tiring that
they are glad of the opportunity of an
early night.
Day 6 Nairobi
The safari
ends today with your return drive to
Nairobi, arriving in the early
afternoon.
